There are wooden golf clubs as well as there are iron golf clubs. The wooden golf club usually has a long shaft and used to hit golf balls to a long distance. In contrast, the iron golf club has a shorter shaft than that of the wooden club and used to hit balls to short distances.

Instructions on How to Forge a Golf Club

Step 1: Get a Steel Rod

You will have to make use of a steel rod to forge the golf club. It would help if you got steel with a diameter of 2 to 3 centimeters. The steel should be of good quality; alloy or carbon steel is highly recommendable for this task.

Step 2: Cut into Small piece

You have to measure and cut a small portion of the steel rod. If you are making multiple golf clubs, you should measure the rod and cut it into small but equal pieces. Measuring it will help increase accuracy and similarity in the products (the golf clubs will all have the same size).

Note:

You do not need to measure before cutting if you are forging just one golf club. It would be best if you used a wheel cutter, jigsaw, or hacksaw to cut the rod to size.

Step 3: Heat the Piece

Forging a cold metal can be frustrating and tiring. This reason alone is why you have to heat your metal before forging with it.

When you heat your metal, forging becomes easy and exciting. It would be best if you also heated the small piece of rod to make your forging enjoyable. Place the rod in a forge to heat it.

Step 4: Flatten the Piece

Once the rod is hot enough to be forgeable, you should remove it from the forge and place it on an anvil. After placing it on an anvil, beat it with a hammer into a flat shape. Make use of a large mallet to speed up the process.

It would be best if you beat the rod to a flat shape so that one side of the bowl is thicker than the other side forming a steep slope.

Step 5: Cut Out Your Shape

This stage is critical because it determines your golf club’s shape. You have to be careful when cutting the shape of the bowl. Make use of a jigsaw to cut the shape.

Quick Steps

  • Mark out the shape you want to cut on the flat steel.
  • It would be best if you cut out a tang-like shape at the top left corner of the bowl along the thick side. The tang-like shape should be perpendicular to the bowl.
  • Shape the tang-like structure with a hammer from a flat shape to a cylindrical shape.

Step 6: Heat Treat the Bowl

You have to heat-treat the bowl to make it tougher and durable. Heat treating is a means of using fire or heat to fortify a metal. To heat treat, place the bowl in a forge for a while.

After heating, retrieve the bowl and place it in a quench liquid. Allow it to cool in the liquid.

Step 7: Grind the Bowl

After heat treating, you should grind the golf with a grinder to remove scales and make it shiny.

Step 8: Drill a Hole in the Tang-like Extension

You will have to drill a hole with the drill press in the tang-like extension. The shaft will join the bowl at this point, making the golf club complete.

You might want to glue the shaft and the bowl together to ensure rigidity. You will insert the rod into the drilled hole.

FAQs on How to Forge a Golf Club

Question

Which is better; the iron club or the wooden club?

The iron club and wooden club have different functions and use. The iron club is useful in hitting short distances while the wooden club is useful in long distance hits. However, in terms of durability, the iron club is more durable than the wooden club making it better in that sense.

Question

Can I forge my club from steel in the absence of iron?

You can forge your club from any metal depending on the material’s availability and the quality of the result you want. The material for forging the metallic golf club does not need to be iron; it can be any other metal.

Question

Does the material used to forge the golf club affect the quality of hit?

The material you use in forging your club affects the quality of the hit. You wouldn’t expect the same quality of strike from a club made from plastic compared to that made from iron. The quality of punch from the iron club will be higher than that of the plastic.
