Instructions on How to Forge a Gladius

Step 1: Get the Material

You should get the material you will use to forge your gladius. Get a long steel plate for your gladius and  make use of this steel plate to forge your sword.

Step 2: Choose a Design

It is not surprising that most people don’t know that there are different types of gladius. You should select the gladius type you want to forge and get a template for the design.

Step 3: Cut Out the Shape

You should transfer the design of the sword you want to forge to the surface of the steel. You can do this by tracing it out or drawing the template on the steel surface.

After transferring the design, you should cut out the shape of the design from the steel. You don’t have to be careful when cutting the form.

Step 4: Heat the Steel

It’s high time you started forging your gladius. A way to make the forging easy is to heat the metal to a high temperature. You have to place the steel in a forge to heat it to a red-hot stage.

Step 5: Hammer the Sides of the Steel

You should retrieve the sword from the forge and hit it with a hammer. When hitting, you should beat the edges of the blade to a flat shape in a way that forms a diamond- shaped steel sword; the center of the blade should be thicker than the edges.

Note:

You should also beat the part for the handle into its shape.

Step 6: Grind the Blade

You should perform a rough grind on edge. The shape of the blade is rough and not very obvious, so you should grind it to make it smoother and bring out the shape of the slopes.

Step 7: Forge a Hilt for the Sword

Your gladius should have a hilt as every other sword does. Follow these steps to forge your grip;

Quick Steps

  • Get a rectangular slab of steel.
  • Cut the plate to the appropriate size.
  • Heat the steel slab in a forge.
  • Make a hole at the center of the plate with a chisel.
  • Enlarge the gap to your preferred size with a hammer eye drift.
  • Insert the hilt through the handle’s end.
  • Make sure the grip fits into the blade.

Step 8: Heat Treat the Blade

Now that you have your gladius, you should heat treat it to make it sturdier. Place the sword in a forge and heat for a very long period. You should heat the blade at a constant temperature for hours before retrieving it.

After retrieving the sword from the forge, you should dip it inside a quench liquid and allow the sword to cool in the liquid before bringing it out.

Step 9: Grinding

After heat treating and quenching your gladius, you will notice scales on the surface of the sword. You have to get rid of these scales by grinding the surface.

Quick Steps

  • Get a belt grinder. You can also make use of other abrasives or sandpaper in the absence of the belt grinder.
  • Rub the surface of the sword against the grinder.
  • Make sure you do not disrupt the angles and shape of the sword.

You can also polish the blade of the gladius to make it shine more.
